Debbie Cleveland

Upper Voice Clinician

Picture
Debbie Cleveland is a two-time International Quartet Champion (“the BUZZ” 2005 & Showtime 1994) and the current 2024 Silver medalist with her awesome quartet Dynasty!  She served as a public school choral music educator for 35 years. She was named the National Music Educator of the Year for NAfME/SAI in 1997 and again for NAfME/BHS in 2018. Her choirs at Gaither High School were consistently rated "Superior" and are regularly selected to perform at EPCOT's Candlelight Processional as well as Saint Patrick's Cathedral in NYC.

Besides sponsoring a Barbershop Harmony Club at school, her top 70-voice traditional choir became an award-winning barbershop chorus known as the "Hurricane of Harmony". They won top ratings and placement at the 2018 and 2019 BHS Midwinter Youth Chorus Festival, as well as being named Audience Favorite both years.

Debbie has been the Coordinator and Girls' Clinician for the annual Hillsborough County Barbershop Workshop for over 20 years, serving 300 students from 20-25 schools each year. She is also a yearly clinician at the Sunshine District Harmony Explosion Camp, and the University of Missouri St. Louis's Acappellooza with Dr. Jim Henry. Three prior gold medalist and one bronze medalist youth quartets ("Duly Noted" SAI Rising Star Champs, "Wildfire" BHS Next Gen Champ, "Singing Double" BHS Junior Quartet Champ and Rising Star 5th Place) have members who were students at Gaither High School, introduced to barbershop by Debbie. She has served on the Education Direction Committee for SAI, as well as being a webcast host and Chair of the Young Women in Harmony Program Coordinators.

Music has been a key part of Alex's entire life. From a fondness for Placido Domingo to early exposure to the a cappella music of The King's Singers, Alex is constantly expanding his breadth of musical knowledge, experience, and expertise. Alex has sung in multiple choruses and quartets for more than 30 years and has won four state quartet championships in Florida in three different voice parts. His quartet, Throwback, is the 2022 3rd-Place International Bronze Medalist in the Barbershop Harmony Society. Alex has amassed quite an impressive barbershop resume, having started directing in his teens after being told he had gifted directing hands." Over the last 20 years, Alex has directed four men's choruses in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, including a competition-only ensemble, THX, and HD Chorus, a youth group comprised of male singers under the age of 25. In May 2019, Alex joined Women of Note as Musical Director, his first foray into the world of Sweet Adelines. In 2012, THX became the first chorus from South Florida to compete at the Barbershop Harmony Society's International competition in over three decades. THX would go on to compete at five straight international competitions, finishing as high as 8th in the world in 2013. Professionally, Alex works in the Financial Technology industry as the head of technology and operations for a company located in Sunrise, FL. Alex and his lovely wife, Jennifer, live in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and have three wonderful children, Emma, Jake, and Kate. When not traveling for work or Barbershopping, Alex enjoys spending family time in the Florida sun, camping, and being on the water, canoeing, and sailing.
