Hello everyone,
HX CAMP IS ALMOST HERE!!! I am beyond excited to be back at camp to see old friends, make new friends, and - make music and laugh together! YAY!
FOR Show Outfits PLEASE BRING:
BLUE JEAN PANTS, CAPRIS, SHORTS (not too short) or SKIRTS (not too short, and with shorts underneath, please) to go with the camp t-shirt for the show. We also have a collection of 1950’s style skirts, so we can use a combo of jeans and skirts onstage.
WHITE SHOES (or SANDALS) if you have them. If not, don’t stress – it’s very casual.
Notes about this year’s music:
- That’s Entertainment – this peppy show opener was from the biggest movie of the 1950’s. This song has the most DIFFICULTY, so please LISTEN to it the most. I also recommend SLOWING IT DOWN with an app like Audio Stretch to practice it because the notes move FAST.
- Orange Colored Sky – this little earworm will have you singing “Flash! Bam!” everywhere you go! Fun, swingy harmony, and a great message about being gobsmacked by unexpected L❤️VE!
- Rock Around/At the Hop – two of THE MOST FAMOUS songs from the 1950’s, this medley captures the Rock-n-Roll feeling that was just starting to happen in that decade. We need CHOREOGRAPHY for this to make it shine.
DON’T FORGET!! We have an 8-PART SONG with the TTBB Chorus and their awesome director Clay Hine. Summer Nights from the musical GREASE. This song has some DIFFICULTY as well, and several verses – work on memorizing the order of the song, as well as the notes and words. This will be the GRAND FINALE of the entire show, so it has to be FABULOUS!
- The whole set of songs is 12 min. You can practice it all FIVE TIMES in one hour. ☺
- If you’re not sure which barbershop part to sing, check out my “Barbershop Parts for Girls”. Hopefully, it will help you out . . . (consider bass if you can sing down to F)
- Please EMAIL ME if you have any questions in the meantime. I look forward to seeing you VERY soon!

BARBERSHOP PARTS FOR GIRLS
By: Debbie Cleveland
Introduction: Girls' voice parts in barbershop carry the same names as guys' barbershop voice parts. Don't be scared by the words tenor, bass & baritone - they just designate specific harmony parts, (and for you Music Theory junkies, the harmonic function) but they do not reflect a gender. As far as overall balance in a barbershop chorus, we need mostly leads and basses, less baritones and very few tenors.
Read on to find which part best fits you...
You might be a LEAD if:
You might be a BASS if:
You might be a BARITONE if:
You might be a TENOR if:
If you're still not sure which part to sing, try singing through a minute or so of each part on one of the songs, and try to narrow it down to two choices before you come to camp. (Hopefully one will be Bass!) You can practice both parts ahead of time, and make a final decision when you get there. Happy Harmonizing!!! ☺

You might be a LEAD if:
- You love acting out the melody and lyrics of a song.
- Your voice gets 'bigger' as you go higher in Soprano range.
- You like to sing karaoke and be a 'star'.
You might be a BASS if:
- Your range goes down to 'F' below middle C. (No matter how high you can sing - some Sop 1's are great basses, right along with some Alto 2's!)
- You are assertive enough to sing melody, but you also like the challenge of harmony.
- You enjoy being adored - basses are the most precious asset in female barbershop, so if you have the range, consider bass for the instant popularity!
You might be a BARITONE if:
- You are an advanced music reader. You enjoy singing challenging intervals all in a row that don't make sense to other people.
- You can hold your own part, even when it alternates being above and below the melody.
- Your sock drawer is organized by color.
You might be a TENOR if:
- Your voice gets more light and "flute-like" the higher you sing in a soprano range.
- You are comfortable reading and singing chromatics (half-steps)
- You don’t mind being teased about having a blonde-moment every now & then.
If you're still not sure which part to sing, try singing through a minute or so of each part on one of the songs, and try to narrow it down to two choices before you come to camp.
